Fashion and Beauty Today By Grace Ong
Clothes... What's the trend today?
Clothes are made of linen. The linen is made from a flax (plant) that grows along the Nile. The clothes that we wear today are very light as the temperature can get very high in Egypt.
Men
Men today all wear wrap-round skirts that is held with a belt. At the moment, the latest trend is wearing pleated garments. Much unlike the Old Kingdom when the skirts worn by men were short. In the Middle Kingdom, the skirts were calf length, (the middle point between the foot and knee).
If you are a rich Egyptian, then you should be able to afford the best and finest linen that is available.

Women
Women today wear long, full length dresses with one or two straps. The trend these days as it seems, is that the dresses worn by Egyptian women seem to be pleated or draped. Actually, most garments these days seem to be pleated as that is the latest trend.
If you are a rich Egyptian women, then you would most likely have the best and finest linen that is available. The linen is so fine that it is almost transparent. Because the linen was so fine, that would make the dresses worn by the rich Egyptians almost transparent.

Children
There isn't much to write about children these days as they usually don't wear any clothes until the age of 6. After that they dress the same as normal men and women.
The Royal Family
The Royal Family includes people like the King/Pharaoh, Queen, Prince and Princess.
Women usually wear clothing made out of linen for everyday life. They would wear brighter clothes over their normal white linen dresses when there is a party or celebration on. The brighter clothes are made of netting and are decorated with colourful beads.

Hair
As it is so hot here in Egypt, most young girls braid their hair. Young boys under the age of 12 shave off all their hair except one tuft on the side of their head. Most adults have their hair short and many men shave their head and face.
For special occasions, people these days wear elaborate wigs (made out of human and animal hair) or wool. They are stuck together with beeswax and often decorated with colourful beads.

Footwear
These days, most people go barefoot. But if you must wear any footwear, you would wear sandals. They are made by weaving papyrus (if you are not wealthy) or leather (if you are wealthy). They are often only worn if it is a special occasion or if your feet might get hurt.

Beauty...Do's and Don't's...
Some Ancient Egyptian jewellery.
Jewellery
We wear our jewellery to show off our fabulous wealth and also because we believe it will make us more attractive to our gods. We wear rings, ear-rings, bracelets, decorated buttons, necklaces, neck collars and pendants. Headdresses are only worn for special occasions. Only the very rich can afford jewellery made of gold and precious stones. Ordinary people just make jewellery from coloured pottery beads.

Makeup
Ancient Egyptian men and women today wear makeup. We use black kohl eyeliner to line our eyes and darken our eye lashes and eye brows.
Henna dye is used to colour our lips and nails. We also use eye shadow, which is made from powdered minerals. We usually use the colours blue or green to colour our eye lids.
